It’s such a great shame if something that is just beautiful, and obviously took much care and effort, just ends up gathering dust in the basement.

Good thing for all miniature enthusiasts, their collections have a place to go in case they need a home. Enter the Miniature Museum of Greater St. Louis in Missouri. This haven for intricate and well-crafted miniatures has provided the avenue for a good number of private collections to be appreciated by many. In here, exhibits are akin to legacies, and they communicate a part of the original owners’ passion and artistry to the museum’s patrons everyday.

Established in 1989, this non-profit museum is the brainchild of a group of ladies who reflected on the future fate of their treasures. Concerned that their children were not as enthusiastic as they were about their miniature collection, or that they did not have the space to store and exhibit their collection, these ladies envisioned a museum that would house their work.

You can tell that it’s passion and love for the craft that sustains this museum, as it is manned by a volunteer board. Originally, the group’s collection could be found at the Miniature World Museum in St. Charles. But in 2000, this passionate group was able to purchase a building for their own. Today, the Miniature Museum of Greater St. Louis is not just home to the original founders’ collection, but displays donated collections from other enthusiasts and museums that closed as well.

The highlights that this museum offers include the sponsorship of two miniature shows annually: the Gateway Miniature Fair and the Garage Sale. In these much-anticipated events, dealers from all over the country exhibit and sell their miniature crafts. It is a perfect opportunity to network with other enthusiasts, find a market for your miniatures, and browse through offerings of dollhouses, dolls, furniture, and dollhouse accessories of different varieties.

If the fairs are not enough to infect your friends with the miniature collecting bug, you can also take them to classes and workshops on miniatures that the museum sponsors. These are usually held within the building where the exhibits are located. Make sure you stop in their library too, and browse through their resources; the museum has assembled together a variety of books and articles about this wonderful and engaging craft.

Then there’s the exhibits themselves. The Miniature Museum of Greater St. Louis stands by its slogan: that ‘miniatures act as a window to history’. You can find exhibits there that vividly capture certain points of our history; from detailed historical houses, to dolls dressed according to the norms of the times they represent. They also have exhibits that follow a particular theme, such as fall scenes and winter holidays.

Among the collections that are guaranteed to entertain and inspire you are fully-furnished Georgian Houses, a Long Branch Saloon with a doctor’s office, Santa’s Summer Home (imagine that!) and a Victorian House Party. There are also unusual miniatures, like miniature needlework and exquisite silver dinnerware from the Netherlands and India.

There are as many hobbies as there are people who enjoy them. Learn more about the popular hobby of building and collecting dollhouses and miniatures.
Many people take delight owning dollhouse collectibles. They enjoy the excitement of having a dollhouse replete with furniture pieces in the right colors. Dollhouse collectibles make ideal decorative masterpieces that they have become so much a growing hobby wherein many people continually search for fun and exciting pieces. If you are highly considering, or into the hobby of owning dollhouse collectibles, here are some things that you need to keep in mind.

Determine your scope. You may want to use some of the pieces that you already have as base for your collection. In addition, you need to determine how big you like your display to be before you start collecting dollhouse pieces. Know whether the items are the same in style, if they come from the same period or if they are matching pieces to the collection. This way, you can figure out how many pieces you will need and whether you like your dollhouse collection simple or elaborate.

Determine your scale. Generally, dollhouses are built using a scale to make sure that the pieces within the display are accurately proportioned. Remember that any worthy dollhouse collectible should be to scale and that all pieces are to the same scale so as not to break the look of your dollhouse.

It is also wise to arrive at a suitable budget before starting on your collection. Depending on your financial capacity, you can invest in some top quality pieces while building your collection slowly or buy more pieces for less, thus building your collection quickly.
Wood or Metal. You can go for metal pieces or the classic wooden ones. Mass produced and centurys old metal dollhouse collectibles that are made in America go for only $50-$150 presently. A nice mass-produced wooden dollhouse can cost you around $350-$600. Americana style wooden dollhouses that were created from the same period can also go some thousands of dollars worth or even more if it includes miniature wooden furnishings. The same also goes for handcrafted wooden dollhouses with their original furniture as well as older, handmade European wooden miniature houses.

Beware of Bargains. You might want to veer away from these as many bargain dollhouse collectibles are usually made of the poorest materials. Although it may look good for a while, it may not last you for long, thus giving you poor value for your money. Make sure to inspect pieces very closely to know its real value. Check for its decoration, gluing, painting, window and roof placement and other details to make sure that you are getting the right dollhouse collectibles.

Many websites feature many dollhouse collectibles. These come from mass-produced kits, plans and patterns that sold in craft stores. Watch out for pieces of the same designs but are sold by various sellers as these could copied from commercial kits and patterns. It is also wise to do a little research on original dollhouse collectibles to make sure that you are indeed buying the real thing.

Building a dollhouse can be lots of fun, especially if you love arts and crafts, decorating, or even if you are just an architect want-to-be. But one of the first questions you will ask yourself is: Should I use a doll house kit or make my own doll house plans? The answer to the question really depends on you, on how unique you want your doll house to be, and on how much time you have to put into it. Making a dollhouse from scratch will take up quite a bit more time. You also want to consider how much money you want to put into the project.

The Time Factor

Building your own dollhouse from your own plans can be very rewarding, and you will end up with a very original doll house, but you need to think about how much time you have to invest in the Project. You also need to look at your abilities. Are you a skilled carpenter and do you have the right tools? If you do, then of course you will want to build your doll house from scratch.

If you have the time, or are willing to prolong your project, and are willing to find the right plans, draw them out to the size you need, cut everything you need to the size you need, and are willing to take the time to get all the measurements right, then you should. When you create a dollhouse from scratch, then your dollhouse will be more unique and original.

The Disadvantages

Of course, if you are under a time constraint or are not that good with carpenter tools, then you probably want to get a dollhouse kit. Putting together a dollhouse from a kit takes a lot less time, less cutting, because everything is pre-made.

The problem is you don’t have a dollhouse that is very unique or different when you build it from a kit, and you cannot really customize it to your needs.

The Cost

Obviously, the money you put into a custom built doll house is going to depend on the type of materials you use. But if you are taking the time to do it this way, then you probably want to buy the best woods and materials you can. After all, you want a dollhouse that can become an heirloom.

Where do you find the Plans?

You can find lots of free doll house plans in every kind of shape online. You can find chalets, and castles, American homes, antique homes, and anything you want. Most online plans give you the scale to work in and the types of materials you will need.

Many of these sites that offer free dollhouse plans also offer free plans for miniature furniture, which you can use to furnish your new house. The dollhouse you build from your own plans is something that will bring your child hours and hours of enjoyment.

Not all telescopes are made alike, so each has some differences. As you read this article, you will discover how you can get the maximum benefit when buying a telescope.

Often when we think of telescopes, viewing the heavens and seeing objects such as our Moon or Jupiter close up come to mind. Even though this is pretty much what telescopes can do, there are some differences in telescopes.

When looking to buy telescopes, you will want to consider what you want to use the telescope for. If you want to use your telescope for terrestrial viewing, there are models of refractor telescope which are great for both viewing the heavens and for terrestrial viewing.

The only problem with such telescopes, is that because they serve a dual role, they generally are not the best telescopes for viewing deep space objects. Note that not all refractor telescopes are designed for multipurpose use.

Refractor telescopes have been generally accepted as the best for viewing local planets within the Solar System. Due to the design, the telescopes retain more of the light, which is important, especially considering that the light from the object is very small.

The universe is a vast and infinite place. A telescope, even the best, only allow us to see a fraction of what is out there. This may seem limiting, but you could use your telescope everyday for a lifetime, and still have many more gems to view.

For many, a reflecting telescope is the best way to go. These telescopes with price verses performance are unparalleled. They allow you to view the best of local objects in our Solar System, and further afield, such as nebulae, and other galaxies.

Before looking for telescopes for sale, you will want to consider what you want out of a telescope. There are many things you can do with a telescope, however, if you want to do backyard astronomy with a telescope, then I suggest buying a reflector telescope.

Telescopes for sale range in vast different prices. You can find telescopes for sale at less than $100, and you can find telescopes for sale, with a price tag of tens of thousands of dollars!

For most people who want a telescope they can use for most purposes, a budget of $300-$500 should yield a good purchase, and provide many years of fun in astronomy. A note to remember about reflecting telescopes, is that you can’t practically use them for terrestrial viewing.

A telescope can also be used to take pictures of the objects you see. Imagine taking pictures when you have found Saturn! You will need a mount, which allows you to connect a camera to the telescope. Make sure there are camera adapters for your telescope before you buy your chosen telescope.

A great place to start, to find telescopes for sale, and Meade telescopes for sale can be found at these links.
Copyright © 2010 ajrwestrop. Visit the original article at http://scrapncrafts.com/blog/hobbies/photography/why-should-i-bother-to-buy-a-digital-camera/.

Digital cameras are literally everywhere these days. Lots of people have them and the digital camera market is very competitive with a wide range of different models sporting a whole host of different features. However, if you are unaware of the advantages and benefits of a digital camera you are probably one of those justified people asking themselves, why should I buy a digital camera? Well this article looks into this very question for you, and explains why a digital camera may be perfect for you. Keep in mind that after you have read this article you may come to the conclusion that a digital camera is not the ideal solution for you and you may decide to keep with a film version, this conclusion is absolutely fine and you will not be alone whatever you decide, this article has been designed to simply empower you so you can make a more informed decision.

The convenience factor

First of all, you have to understand the convenience factor with digital cameras, with film style cameras; you need to continuously get your films developed and re-load film into your camera and for a busy person or someone who lives remotely etc this can be an issue. With a digital camera, you capture images as per a film camera however you can then instantly upload the pictures to your PC/laptop, or if you do not have a home computer, you can actually plug the camera straight into a digital printer which enables you to instantly print the pictures. So basically you are cutting out the middleman.

Features

Film cameras and digital cameras serve the same purpose and that is obviously to capture moments in time, and both can do this in fine fashion, however for the person wanting to go that extra mile to get that extra fine picture the digital camera is in a league of its own. Features within a digital camera can be comprehensive, first of all you normally get a LCD which means you can instantly review your pictures to determine in an instance whether it is a picture you would like to retain or delete. Other features you can benefit from include various adjustable settings such as lighting effects/exposure. However one of the greatest benefits with digital camera is indeed the advanced technology, some technology now within cameras can detect faces, stamp out the shake of a persons hand to prevent blurry pictures and take pictures automatically when your subject smiles.

The future

Simply put, digital cameras are the future. Companies are investing millions into their digital models as they know this is what the majority of the market wants. Therefore advanced technology will always be released within digital models and eventually within time film cameras will be made obsolete.

We hope this article has helped you consider whether a film camera or digital camera is the right option for you, and remember whatever you decide make sure you do your research to get the best deal.

Copyright © 2010 kadence64. Visit the original article at http://scrapncrafts.com/blog/hobbies/what-makes-resin-model-cars-so-special/.

The model car is ever in demand today as most people can’t afford to do much of anything else. Gas is too high to go anywhere, so more and more families are staying home and taking part in the hobbies they had neglected with time. The more rare the model kit, the more it cost the individual. Another price that is rising is what is called resin model cars, but they don’t cost nearly as much as the rarer car models. This is what is causing more model car companies to switch to resin. So, for those of you who are wondering what resin cars are just keep reading.

A Basic Definition

Resin cars are those model cars that are made out of this material. It’s called resin of course, but what it is, is actually a plastic that is really a cast and not what used to be known as injection-molded. Due to the lessening of the injection-molded types of model cars, the machines that were once used to make them are no longer needed. The resin kits don’t cost as much as the kits whose materials are made out of polystyrene. But they are pretty expensive.

So, how do marketers determine what to charge for these new resin brands? One thing that determines the price of these model cars are the volume at which they are producing the cars, as well as how well these models turn out. The quality at which they are developing them is the big determining factor as to how much they go for when you buy them off the shelf at the store of your choice.

Not only is there a difference in prices for these model cars, but the different types of materials affects you the buyers as well. Those model cars made out of resin are different from those older types in the fact that there is more to do when you put them together. The resin material is more brittle, and when you sand this material, you should really wear a mask as the fumes are more toxic. When you put the model together, you might need different materials. This is due to the fact that the chemicals in the two seem to be different, and may require different glue as well as different paint. But the resin seems to be sturdier.

The Benefits for Producer and Consumer

Companies have seen that their buyers are a bit more pleased with the resin cars. This is to say that, for once, a company listened to its buyers and created something that could help them both out. The cars hold up a lot longer. Plus, people who have made model building an addicting habit haven’t been spending so much out of their pocket. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Of course, people using the resin cars have more work ahead of them, and should take more precautions with the chemical components they use to piece the kits together; they do enjoy a better overall experience. A good compromise for both parties involved, if I do say so myself, being a fan of putting these kits together.

Copyright © 2010 vgevge. Visit the original article at http://scrapncrafts.com/blog/hobbies/how-to-assemble-a-model-tank/.

No matter where you have gotten it from, be it a holiday gift or an impulse buy, a model tank can be extremely fun to assemble. If you have decided to try assembling models as a hobby just remember that you are choosing to join in on a pastime that is enjoyed world wide. Model building is an excellent stress reliever and can be a great way to pass the time as well. One thing that will help you on your way is by knowing how to correctly assemble your model. One of the first things you should always do is to gather your tools. It is best if you keep them together in one spot to make this part easier.

There are not too many tools needed for building models. Of course you need a model, model cement, rubbing alcohol and some toothpicks. You should also try to gather a drop cloth of some sort as well as some small hobby clamps. These clamps are excellent for hold small parts together so that the cement can dry properly without allowing them to slip apart. The alcohol is handy for cleaning up any extra cement that happens to drip in unwanted spots or to get rid of excess cement. If you do have a drop cloth then it can help to cut down on the accidental spills and drips.

Take your instructions from the box and determine which parts are to be assembled first. You will then need to carefully cut these parts from the sprue which is the plastic frame that all the parts come attached to. There are times that you may find extra bits of plastic stuck to the parts. This is called flashing and is a by-product of the manufacturing technique. You can safely remove this after making sure that it is not actually a vital part of your model. Set aside the bits of sprue and flashing as you go. These can come in handy later on if you have to do any repair work to this model or any others.

Once you have all the parts you are about to assemble loose you can then do a dry fit. A dry fit means that you will place the parts together without gluing them to make sure that they will fit properly. After you know that they will fit together correctly you can then apply cement and connect the parts. This is where the toothpicks come in handy. By applying the cement with the toothpicks you can easily control the amount that you apply. You will not have to worry about a large amount leaking onto your parts and causing major problems.

Remember to apply your cement sparingly and allow proper drying time before moving on to the next step. If you do have hobby clamps then they may be used to help keep proper contact between the cemented surfaces until they are dry. If you do not have any then you might make your own using paper clamps or even paper clips. Most of all you should try to enjoy yourself. Model building can be fun and informative. You will be able to enjoy your model tanks for years to come.

Copyright © 2010 vgevge. Visit the original article at http://scrapncrafts.com/blog/hobbies/model-trucks-displaying-large-models/.

Have you ever tried collecting large model trucks just to find that they end up sitting somewhere and getting ignored? Is there any way at all that you can display these big models so that they will make much more of an impact? You could just pack them away in a box and take them out from time to time or you could actually build a display case for them. If you have ever noticed a museum display then you might have seen that they can make all the difference in the world between a mediocre display and a truly awesome one.

One of the first things to decide is how many of the model trucks you have assembled will need to go into your new display case. The flat part of your display case will partially be determined by this number. It will also make a big difference if you are going to make it a diorama or if it will be a static display. You might add any number of different touches just depending on what sort of truck it is that you have assembled.

Now that you know roughly how much space you need you will then better be able to decide how much space you will need in your home. One example of this would be for a 1:8 scale truck. If you are going to display two of them then you are going to need a board that is roughly three foot long and about four or five feet long. You will then have the space you will need to have your models placed where you want them and you will also be able to angle them so that they are not exactly parallel.

One of the best boards that you can use for this would be 1/4 inch plywood. This wood can look very nice if it has been properly treated. You must first stain it and then add a finish. Next you will want to figure out exactly how high it needs to be. One of the best steps to take first would be to provide support to the underside of the plywood deck. 2X4 lumber can work perfectly for this purpose. You might also want to use pine since it can be much more cost effective. Also, it will be out of sight once you have finished it. Once you have fixed the framework in place on the underside you will then be prepared to build the tall portion of the display. This part will be easy after having finished the first.

If the display is to be slightly higher than your waist then you should use the height of your own waist as the base measurement and build from there. An example of this would be as follows: If your waist is roughly 37 inches high then you would subtract the height of the top frame and the bottom frame from this number. You will then have the relative length that your support legs will need to be. In this case it would need to be 33 inches long on each one. If you intend to place a good deal of weight on your display then you might want to add extra support. Place each of your sections and attach them one at a time. Make sure that your screws are long enough to go through the plywood and both 2×4s so that you get the most support possible. This will pull everything down tight and give it the support it needs.

The last part of the base is the bottom. This will be basically the same as the top section as far as the 2×4 frame. Once this is in place you can then add your side panels. These just need to be plywood sections cut to fit over the holes on the side of the display case. Make sure that you measure these a couple times before you choose to cut them so that you do not chance a mistake. It is much cheaper to measure than it is to replace. Screw these down with some 1/2 inch screws and you will be done with the base. The only thing that you will have to do is add some trim and some finish as well.

If you want to add a cover to your display then you can use glass or you can purchase Plexiglas and cut it to fit in a box shape. This will look nice placed over your new model truck display. You can now be proud to show it to show it off to your friends and family.

If you want to cover your model cars then you can either purchase plexiglass sheets which you can cut and make into a box shape to set over your display or you can get fancy and have a glass cutter cut out individual panes and then you can frame them in on top of your display. Either way your model car display will look great and you can be proud to show it to others.

Copyright © 2010 vgevge. Visit the original article at http://scrapncrafts.com/blog/hobbies/building-ideas-for-model-truck-dioramas/.

It will always be both rewarding and fun to build model trucks for many people. A hobby that has transcended many generations now it can allow you to show people how much skill you have built. You could just stick them on a shelf somewhere and let them gather dust or you can actually create a special display for it. This will allow your model to have much more character than it normally would. The way to achieve this is by building a diorama.

When you create a scene that is true to life but built to scale it is known as a diorama. Whether it is a scene from nature or of an actual city is totally up to you. You can also chose to enclose your diorama in glass or even in clear plastic sheeting. You might also choose to just mount it on a board for a general sort of display. By knowing where dioramas originated you might be better know why this would make a good choice.

A part of history, dioramas have been around for centuries. They have always been used as a means of reproducing actual scenes that have been scaled down. Museums use them now to be able to create displays showing historical scenes. People have been using dioramas for a way to have a small dollhouse scene. Many times they would use shoeboxes to do this. These mini rooms would sometime even be a tiny copy of their own rooms. Model makers have been been using dioramas to be able to display their models for some time now.

Most dioramas are usually built to match the model truck that is going to be displayed in them. One example would be that of a 1930’s model milk truck. You would not want to set this in a modern city setting. It would be much more at home in a setting based around a dairy farm. Unfortunately many model builders have grown up and gotten out of building dioramas altogether.

If you decide to go with a diorama as a means of displaying your model truck you will be carrying on a tradition that could else pass away. So how do you begin the process of building a diorama? It is easy enough, you will begin by deciding what time period you should be building. This will begin to help you get ideas as to how it should be built. Make sure that your model truck fits into the scene. You will not want to be anachronistic unless this is what you are specifically trying to do.

After choosing your time period you are then ready to decide on the specific details of the project. If you are building a dairy then you should think about a barn and cows. If it is a tow truck then you might set it outside of a filling station. You might try looking at pictures in an encyclopedia. These can give you great ideas on the way that your buildings and scenes should appear for the chosen time period. No matter where you get your information, be it books, personal photos, or the Internet you will be keeping an age old tradition alive.

Never fear, with a bit of intestinal fortitude and some ingenuity you can soon have your new model truck assembled and looking as great as it did in the Internet pictures.

The first thing you must do is to figure out a way around the language barrier. There are many companies today that actually produce their models with multinational marketing in mind. In this vein they often include multilingual instructions in their boxes. Some may not however when it comes to trucks that may not be offered in all countries. If you are able to identify what language you are reading then you have a leg up to begin with. Knowing where your model came from can go a long ways toward helping you with this. The next step is to figure out whether or not you can translate these instructions yourself. There are online companies that offer translation services. You may even be able to get their services for free. Run a search on the Internet for these and see what you come up with. While there are many available it might take some digging to find the one you want. After you have then you can get your rough translation. This will help you when moving on to the next step.

The pictures are your next best friend when building a foreign model. Take your instructions and match all the pictures with the parts that match them. You might consider marking the sprue with a bit of nail polish and set each step with a certain color. This will help once you begin the assembly. If you are missing parts then you might have a bit of a time continuing. First see if the company has a help line in your language. If it does then go ahead and call. They may be able to send you the part(s) for free or at most just charge you for shipping. If they do not then you might have to consider making your own replacement parts. You can use the leftover parts of the sprue for this if it is a small part. If it is a large piece then you might have to adapt a part from another model for this purpose.

The last thing you will do is to assemble your model truck. All your patience at identifying parts and translating text can pay off here. If not then you will definitely have a challenge ahead of you. Take each step one at a time. Identify all the parts in the step and set them aside. Match each one up with the parts in the step and assemble them carefully. One thing you should always do is to do a test fit so you can be sure that each part will fit into place before you glue them. This will help to verify that they are in the right place and will keep you from having to cut parts loose and trying to reattach them. You are now ready to go out and give it a shot. Find yourself a foreign model truck and see if you can get it to come out looking like the picture!
