Whether you have seen the hit movie, "The Secret" or not, I'm sure you can relate to a person who always seems to get the breaks. You know, someone who has a "things will work out alright" approach to life. Well, let's face it, things generally do for that person.
That, in essence, is the message of The Secret. It's really not such a secret when you think about it. Pessimists have a lot of negative things happen to them. Optimists have a lot of positive things happen to them.
When I hear students tell me they don't get the grades they want because they aren't as smart as the others, I get chills.
You see, it's not always a question of intelligence when it comes to learning. It's just as much a question of learning strategies that make things easier. Successful kids have strategies. That's what makes them successful.
There are 3 steps you need in order to learn anything fast (and easy, too!). The problem is, people (young and old), want to skip one of the steps and get right to the success part. Well, successful students don't cut corners.
My students learn the same way I used to learn. They cram. They stress, They overwork.
And they may end up getting good grades but feel like the effort has been too much. They tell me they know no other way and I believe them.
I went through high school and college with the same mindset and I hated the whole process.
Now that I'm older and wiser (I hope) I can see my mistakes. If I had only known way back when. Some of my students today take my advice and see an immediate improvement. Others are too afraid to change and so continue the same way as before.
Little Johnny's a first grader who comes home with vocabulary words to study. He has a quiz tomorrow. He tells mom and mom goes over the words with him for a couple of minutes. Once he gets them all right, she gives him a high five.
The next day comes, Johnny sits down for the quiz and remembers half of what he had studied. He brings the quiz home and mom says, "Darn, you knew them so well last night."
What happened?
Man this has been a hard year for summer school. It's hot and the kids are acting out, probably because of it. The end is not coming fast enough. I am looking forward to the last week coming and going. The week after I am going on vacation. Yeah!!! I am going for my 8th anniversary to Branson just me and my husband. It is going to be so great, so relaxing. I will have to take lots of pictures. You know for the scrapbooks. Love to do that to.
