A Brief History Of Musical Instruments

June 23rd, 2008 by AlanPhillips | No Comments | Filed in Music

No one is certain when the first musical instruments were made. It’s possible that they predate language in human cultural development, but I’ll leave that argument to the anthropologists. What is sure is that there is a deep, ancient desire within people to express themselves using sound. Our voices were almost certainly used for more than communication. Somehow that was not enough. Our ancestors pushed creative sound further.

The first instruments were probably percussive because they are the simplest to make. Clapping hands or striking flint on flint, it’s easy to imagine that this would be our earliest attempts to make our own rhythm, our own pulse, sent out into the world and echoed back. What likely followed were simple mallets and skins stretched on bowls. What makes these tools so distinct is that were not needed for hunting, food preparation or defense; they had no other purpose than to create a controlled, predictable sound. With advances in metallurgy, gongs and bells developed. Our modern drums are a descendant of this type of early instrument.

Most likely, wind instruments came next. These could have been created relatively easily with a hollowed out plant stem or animal horn to create a simple whistle or horn. The initial benefit was increased amplification. Later, it was discovered that the resonating chamber of the instrument could be manipulated to give differences in pitch. Significantly, many of the wind instruments use breathing to generate and control the sonic effects, which closely resembles our vocal chords. Further technical advancements in smelting and metal working gave us instruments with more sound making precision and exceptional durability. Modern trumpets and saxophones are closely related to these early instruments. Xylophones and organs are special percussive-wind hybrids that gave chording or polyphony in a single instrument.

Stringed instruments likely came last. Egyptian records indicate that instruments using vibrating strings existed at the time of the pharaohs, near the dawn of recorded civilization. Lyres and harps are early examples and their manufacture and required a dedicated craftsman for their manufacture. Strings not only give the instrument a potential for harmony and cording on one device, but also frees the vocal chords of the performer for singing in accompaniment. A later development added a resonating chamber making the instruments potentially louder. Violins and guitars are modern string instruments. Pianos are a special hybrid; it has hammers that strike the strings making it percussive and stringed.

The control and use of electricity took musical instruments to a completely new level with developments like the microphone and amplifier. Guitars had pick-ups added, keyboards had wave form manipulation and the most mind-boggling innovations have come with computers and digital music. Effects technology that alters the sound between the instrument and amplifier keep adding rich tonal qualities that are still being explored. Experiments are being conducted to create plasma instruments and other advances could bring instruments that interface directly with our brains.

Like our ancestors, we still use sound to create and the instruments we use are developed along with our technology. We keep stretching the possibilities toward the horizon and when we arrive, I believe we will find more horizon to explore.

Rap Beats Get You Noticed If They Are Potential Hits - Hip Hop Beats Are Crucial To Getting Signed

You have the talent. You even have a small fan base. Your family friends and supporters are asking when you plan to take the next step. The question is: Do you have what producers are looking for from a new artist? Do you sound professional? Do you have a catchy beat?

The first thing you need to do is to take a good, hard look at what you do have. Be a professional, it is what you have to be if you want to make it. Be unbiased and highly critical. Analyze it. In particular, listen to the strength of the beats. Are they hot? Do they create a good buzz? Remember, the beat sells music these days both to the audience and the producers.

What you need, and what producers want from any new artist they plan to sign may vary from label to label. There are, however, certain main characteristics they need to see or, rather hear, in their latest single or group artist. It begins with sound and ends in quality. It involves talent, but does not ignore originality.

The first thing you need to do is to grab the attention of your audience, This requires something different a fresh approach, a new voice. Listen to you music. Does it simply go over old ground? Is what you are saying or playing the same-old, same-old? Do you have a mundane beat? Does your musical beat reach way down inside your audiences guts and pull at them? Is it impossible for anyone listening to you to forget the beat, the rhythm of the music, when it stops? Does your beat rock them hot or leave them cold?

If you and your crew are exactly like a half-dozen other groups on the market, you might as well stick to playing covers. A producer wants fresh voices, new hot beats, not carbon copies of something already out there. Try to adapt a novel approach to your music. Add some new beats, great lyrics, shake up your rhythmic concepts.

Go online and see what there is to offer to punch up your style. Look at the possibilities. Hip hop beats or instrumental tracks, rhythm and blues and pop. Add jazz beats or reggae if it highlights your skills and achieves the intended purpose. Mix and match with your vocals or instruments and see what you have. There are many different ways of changing the sound of your music. While it should always relate to your lyrics and intent, the beat is crucial in todays pop and underground world. Create a unique sound, use a great beat, one that fits your style and make it totally yours. As a result, it will help a producers and fans notice you.

Realize, being unique does not mean going out so far on a limb nobody understands you. Do not ignore your core audience, but use the beats and take the talent you have, combining it with something that relates to your lyrics or vocal style. In a competition to get attention, lyrics are important, but if you dont have the right beat the right kind of attention will pass you by.

Yet, no matter how good you sound, how talented you are or how unique you may be do not ever forget the production quality of your demo. It is no good to you or your group, if you sound good, live, but fail to capture it on tape. The same applies if you are inconsistent in what you do. On tape, in the studio or live, you must deliver the same high quality performance if you want to be noticed, taken seriously and signed. Your performance demo must be sharp. The sound needs to be clear. You need to convince the producer you have an identity, quality, consistency and craftsmanship.

Hip Hop Beats Can Help An Artist Stand Out - Get Rap beats Instrumentals Like The Major Labels Do

It may seem strange, but in today’s music world, vocals and lyrics are no longer the determining factor in a artists success. The beat is in the forefront now, driving many contemporary hip-hop, r&b and pop pieces straight up the charts.

There are a number of different beat styles. Some common categories are east-coast beats, west-coast beats, club beats, and chopped and screwed beats. The type of beat can determine whether it is classified as commercial or underground although many times there is crossover.

Finding the correct types of beats like those found in successful hip-hop, r&b, and pop music can enhance your performance in a very noticeable way. This is why it is imperative for you, as an artist, to have the right beats backing you up, in order to showcase your talent.

There are numerous elements to consider when deciding on a song’s beats; however, you must always keep in mind what your listening public wants to hear. Ensure that your performance stands out so that people remember more than just the beat that is stuck in their head. Always remember to chose carefully when selecting rap beats, hip hop beats, or r&b instrumentals; making sure that the beats motivate you to write a song that will stay with the listener.

A song with a hot beat can still reach the platinum level, even if it is not so great. Because the beat is compelling, the song repeats over and over in your head. Haven’t you ever wondered how a certain song went platinum in the first place?

Pay attention to the percussion instruments that provide a lot of bass; fans seem to be drawn to a deep, soul shaking beat. Whether you are working with rap, r&b, or hip hop instrumentals the beats should have similar traits that move the crowd.

The beat is the foundation for a strong, catchy, melody. It may even have a melody already incorporated into it. It’s often common for rap and hip hop instrumental beats to have the melody built in while others give you the room so that you can either rap to it, or sing in the chorus like ‘50 Cent’ does.

It’s important that your beats sound great whether played in a club, or on the radio. If the beat has a been mixed and mastered correct, it will make you sound as great as any big hit artist after you add your vocals to it.

As a new, and not yet established artist, you may not have all the money necessary to get the highest quality beats, but you can find professional quality beats for a reasonable amount of money on a handful of websites.

When trying to find a beat it is best to pick one that highlights your talent and does not detract from it. The beat you choose should not only be hot, but it should also go well with your talent and allow it to show through.

A good beat is important, but your talent is the key to your success. Practice your craft everyday. The perfect beats can be utilized by a person, to enhance his talent, thus allowing him to obtain this higher level of success.

With the help of quality music beats, many artists grow to amazing heights. The right music beat can improve an artists performance, seemingly overnight!

How To Play Music By Ear

April 22nd, 2008 by jimmycox | No Comments | Filed in Music

For most, the idea of playing a musical instrument can be baffling from the start. Especially if you have never played a musical instrument in your life! Even if you do not have musical instrument, you can always begin with voice. Piano is excellent for the beginner to start learning.

But what about those with just enough experience to go beyond and venture out into more extensive musical territory? What about the one who perhaps did not make it in musical theory class in college yet still has the desire to play music. Well, this information and the available book are good news for you!. What about the guitar player, the sax man, the drummer, the flautist, the harmonica, harp player, rhythm and bells! What about the one who desires to play music by ear for an adventure in self-expression?

You have come to the right place! Being a musician who plays by ear while next to a musician who reads and plays classical music adeptly can be intimidating. We`ve come to think of a person who plays by ear as a non-studious musician, when we might in fact be overlooking a creative genius in the making! Not to discredit those who have spent years in study, even earning Masters and PHDs. The ear is actually a musical instrument. Sound waves strike the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and cause it to vibrate. These vibrations are then passed through the tiny bones in the middle ear and on to the hearing nerve in the inner ear which sends them to the brain. So, listening, hearing or playing by ear should not be discounted.

Take an individual who has perhaps never played a musical instrument but listens to hours and hours of a wide variety of music. Now take another individual who has spent many hours, days and nights studying, learning and performing with ease from sheet music. If we were to put these two in a room, we would have one outstanding listener and one outstanding performer. But what if the listener was asked to perform without sheet music? Would the listener be able to perform at all?

Absolutely, simply from the acute hearing already developed in their brain. And what about the reader of music, who sees the notes and plays them to perfection, what would the reader do if asked to improvise a new song? Could they create one with ease or would it take a lot for them to creativity compose on the spot? It`s simply a question for you to think about. This leads us to further questions…

When we learn to talk, do we all begin with the same words? Of course we don`t. We learn most easily the words that have to do with our chief interests. Similarly, in playing by ear the student should follow his own inclinations rather than the order of this book. Does one really need a text to learn to speak a language that he hears several hours every day? Grammar and a dictionary can be of great help. Does one really need a text to play music that he hears on the radio and on CDs several hours each day? This book will help. The ear player must practice, just as the note player must practice. But practicing does not need to be drudgery. The most effective practice means having a good time with the instrument each time.

Summary
Learning to play a musical instrument by ear does not have to be a drag! If you want to play it, play it! Don`t let an inability to read music keep you from enjoying your dream instrument. Pick it up and play today by ear!
