The Beginning of the Telescope

September 30th, 2008 by elijahkim | No Comments | Filed in Hobbies

One day hundreds of years ago, a man named Galileo Galilei had the idea that if he could fashion some sort of instrument to look into the night sky, he could see the stars and planets better. Thus, the telescope was born. Since then, telescopes have evolved into powerful instruments that allow us to research planets, stars, and explore the night sky like never before.

Many people own their own telescopes and enjoy astronomy as a hobby. It really is fascinating undertaking looking into the sky and studying the constellations. When you look through the lens of a telescope, you can really find out some amazing things about the world we live in.

With the help of a telescope, you can see crevices and craters on the moon, the brilliance of the stars, and so much more. There are many, many constellations in the sky - all with a storied history rooted in mythology and with their own stories.

Without telescopes, there are many discoveries that wouldn’t have been made. New planets and moons are being discovered as are new galaxies and solar systems. You don’t have to be interested in space necessarily to enjoy using a telescope. What you do need, however, is a desire to learn something new about the world we live in.

Telescopes can be large or small and expensive or not so expensive. If you are really into astronomy, you will want to have a large telescope that is rather powerful. If you are simply a casual observer, a smaller telescope would do just fine.

You can even make your own telescope, believe it or not. There are kits available at hobby stores or you can choose to make one from scratch. It can be amazingly satisfying to be able to see the stars through something that you made with your own two hands!

Everyone can enjoy the fun and rewarding hobby that telescopes can provide. Young people can learn about the brilliance of space, older people can pass on their knowledge as they continue to find more and more new and exciting discoveries with telescopes.

It’s a big world out there with many discoveries to be made, and telescopes make exploring that world fun and exciting. The vastness of the universe is an amazing concept - one that can probably never be fully understood. But when you start to look at the universe with a telescope, you’ll come to realize that it truly is a big world we live in.

The Joy Of Landscape Painting

September 30th, 2008 by xxzombiesxx | No Comments | Filed in Painting

Any scene or landscape that you encounter, which ignites that starvation for painting, should not be wasted. Landscapes change now and then that could have been recorded using a canvas, paint, and your brush, so you have to learn how to either replicate or distort the image into how you see and understand it the best way possible. If you want to specialize more on landscape painting, then you have the entire world as your subject. A mere dandelion in the fields could become something beautiful, majestic, and deep. The sight of a wooden shack under the large branches of a giant oak tree could make people laugh and appreciate the scene even more. There are so many things you can do with landscape painting and some tips and tricks can help you paint even better than before.

1) What Your Subject Is

Painting landscapes do not necessarily mean you have to paint everything that you see in the scenario. Refrain from wasting time by painting every single detail that you see in the landscape. Try to adjust and see what really strikes you in your landscape, how it makes you feel as a person living in this world, and how you understand the concept of it all. Choose which elements are strong in the scene before you, and use that to create the painting.

2) Imagination

Like I said before, in painting landscapes you have to use your imagination to make an ordinary landscape scene look original and unique. If you insist on doing everything perfectly alike, then you might as well be a photographer instead. Use your perspective as much as you can and try different ways in making a simple picture of a garden or a mountain look interesting. Using your imagination would give you all kinds of ideas that would make you an even more admirable painter.

3) Give Importance to Position

The landscape can be painted in all sorts of ways. You don’t really have to limit yourself to painting everything in the background to look like a normal landscape. You can always use elements or subject figures in the foreground to add more life to your painting. Try using the rule of thirds in your painting and play with the foreground of the image so that viewers of your painting, especially those with no background in art and painting, would appreciate and enjoy your work.

Being a landscape artist allows you to try out all sorts of possibilities with your work since you have the entire world as your subject. Except for scenes with famous buildings and monuments, try to tweak as many ordinary landscapes as you can and use your imagination to bring out your style as an artist. Don’t hesitate to try out things like buying green paints for the grass and trees, or doing a series of paintings. A lot of buyers of good art would love something that strikes them as unique, out of the ordinary and which catches their attention and the attention of everyone else.

Deciding Between Acrylic And Oil Paints

September 30th, 2008 by xxzombiesxx | No Comments | Filed in Painting

Painting isn’t really painting when you don’t know what materials to use for your artwork in the first place. The best paintings are brought to life when the artist uses paints that work well and that brings out the effect that he or she wants to emit in the painting. Nowadays painters are deciding which would be the best paint to use based on the safety and the quality of the painting material. They usually have two choices: they could either use acrylic paint or oil paint. The features of each make big differences on the output and have its own advantages and disadvantages, which puts it in a debate in the art and painting community.

Oil paint and acrylic paint have various characteristics and benefits that make it difficult to choose which one would be best for painting. Oil painting is basically one of the oldest mediums for paintings, dating back as early as the 13th century England. Its use was not actually for artistic purposes but for interior decoration. It has been used by famous traditional painters for centuries onwards and is still being used by modern painters in today’s society. The only disadvantage is that it is slow in drying since it consists of small particles mixed in linseed oil, wax stabilizer, thinner and a drying agent all in one. So if you are an artist who believes in the traditional use of oil paintings, be prepared to wait for months for your painting to be ready for placement in the frame. Depending on the amount of oil that you use for either a landscape or a portrait, the oil may take a long time to dry. What you can expect though from this tedious process is a painting that has been seriously worked on with much emphasis on detail and texture to make it the best that it can be.

Artists who want to get their paintings done faster than oils, on the other hand, are instead using acrylic paint. This type of paint has been used commercially since the 1950s and is a fast-drying medium, which consists of pigment mixed with acrylic resin plus mineral spirits. What’s fun about acrylic paint is that you can dilute it in water and it is water resistant when dried and put into canvass. If you are a really skilled artist, with careful mixture and measurement of the amount of paint to be used, your painting could actually resemble water color or oil paintings as well. Though it doesn’t take much effort to make and wait for a painting to dry, the quality of the work will have to depend on how well you use and mix your paints to come up with something exquisite. If you use acrylic just to get your paintings to finish on time for an art show or exhibit in two weeks’ time, then most likely they won’t have the same texture and deep essence that an oil painting, done with patience and sheer hard work, has.

What Is The Source Of Resourcefulness?

September 30th, 2008 by kphirst | No Comments | Filed in Humor

“Never trouble another for what you can do for yourself” - that was Thomas Jefferson’s way of saying be resourceful; and the 3rd president of the Unite States epitomized resourcefulness. In addition to being an astute politician, Jefferson was an architect, author, horticulturist, inventor, paleontologist and founder of the University of Virginia. When President Kennedy welcomed a group of Nobel Prize winners to the White House, he described them as the most extraordinary group of talent ever gathered there - with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson was there alone.

Zig Ziglar, well known motivational speaker and author, attributes much of his success to always being able to find a capable hand at the end of one’s sleeve. That can be especially true in the kitchen. Soup, stew and meatloaf are dishes based on resourcefulness - as well as leftovers. Resourcefulness also comes in handy when what you make doesn’t turn out right. For example, when a little bit of egg yolk gets in the egg whites and prevents a souffle from rising, all is not lost. A resourceful chef would call the flat souffle a frittata.

Resourcefulness is what gave us the TV dinner. It also gave Swanson & Sons a way to use 270 tons of unsold, Thanksgiving turkey. Turkey, cornbread stuffing, peas and sweet potatoes were put in a compartmentalized, aluminum tray. Then the tray was put in a box that looked like a TV. Although the 78 cent TV dinner had a production estimate of 5,000 for the first year, Swanson sold more than 10 million in that time. Swanson stopped calling their frozen meals TV dinners in 1963; but they’ve been talking turkey - their best seller - ever since.

Resourcefulness is what the Makers Movement is all about. Its aim is to re-imagine uses for objects that would otherwise be thrown away. Because of an unstable economy, what started as a movement for techno geeks became a movement for average consumers to re-use objects. To promote re-use one of the directives in the 2005 Makers Bill of Rights is “The ease of repair should be a design ideal - not an afterthought”. To promote this belief, movement leaders met with major manufacturers to request things like their using screws instead of glue and their making schematics readily available - things that would enable consumers to fix what they buy. Today the phrase throw-away culture should be used only for bad yogurt.

Six Maternity Clothes Fashion Tips

September 29th, 2008 by AmyJarman | No Comments | Filed in Fashion

1. Choose stretchy fabric. Buy clothing with a lot of stretch but that fits snuggly around the belly and your curves. Wearing bigger clothes may sound comfortable and practical, but clothes that do not hug your figure will actually make you look bigger than you are and you may be mistaken for overweight rather than pregnant. Choose clothing that emphasizes the parts of your that are not expanding - such as ruched sleeves to show off your arms, cropped pants or skinny jeans if you have trim legs.

2. Buy tops with ruching designs. Ruching is when the fabric is gathered on the sides with elastic in a stylish way to fit snuggly and stretch with your body as it expands. This type of styling is perfect for maternity because it actually trims down your silhouette and allows you to look pregnant and sexy at the same time. Ruching at the sides allows a snug fit over the belly and ruching at the bust also allows for an attractive fitted look with room for expansion.

3. Try leggings. Leggings which used to be so taboo after the 80s are back in style and so much better than they ever were. Today’s leggings come in all colors, lengths and fabrics for any season- there are cropped leggings with lace, leggings with ruching detail below the knee and leggings that hit ankle length for the colder months. Today’s leggings come in all different colors and styles, so choose a good weight legging for the weather with a lot of stretch and pair with a tunic, longer maternity top or sweater. Best of all leggings are super comfortable for maternity and can fit either below, across or over the belly depending on the style you choose.

4. Show some skin. By showing a little skin, you can show you are still sexy when you are pregnant. Pregnancy is not a time to hide behind your clothes and cover up your whole body in shame. Be proud and show off your new curves. For many women this is the first time they can experience some cleavage, so take advantage of this life changing event and try out some new necklines. Scoop necks, cross over style V necks and sexy maternity tanks and tubes are all popular styles in maternity today, so now is the time to try out some new looks with your new enhancements!

5. Dress with color. Although everyone likes black and denim, don’t get stuck in rut with all neutrals for 9 months or you will tire of your maternity clothes very quickly. Instead, mix it up a bit with some pastels and bright tees and tanks for summer and a colorful sweater or two for Fall and Winter. After all, if you already have a lot of neutrals, chances are your colorful items will mix and match very well with your existing wardrobe.

6. Be Decorative. Every wardrobe needs a few decorative accents to keep it interesting. It’s important to invest in a few fashion items with color so you can keep your maternity wardrobe interesting. Try some ruffled trims or embroidered tops and tunics to mix up the fabric a bit. Beaded accents on a halter top can make an otherwise ordinary looking top take on new life. Pick some items with some decorative detail you really like and you will find yourself reaching for them in your closet when you want jazz it up a bit. Small details such as fashion pieces with a styling detail can make pregnancy an even more enjoyable time.

Creating Healthy School Lunches For Kids

September 29th, 2008 by CarrieLauth | No Comments | Filed in Cooking

One of the issues moms face as they send their kids back to school is preparing lunches. Not only are they concerned with preparing food for the kids each day, but preparing healthy and nutritious lunches! This can be quite the challenge, especially with picky youngsters. We all want our kids to eat well so they can learn well, but how do we create a meal that’s healthy that our kids will actually eat?

Here are a few tips and ideas for doing just that:

Think outside the lunch box. Don’t just create a plain old boring square sandwich every day. Try a lettuce wrap, a tortilla roll-up, a pita, or a sandwich made with a cookie cutter or whole grain waffles (use some of the organic frozen ones) for the bread. Try various types of bread to create unique sandwiches that will be not only healthy but fun and exciting for your child to eat. Presentation is big with kids. They love to eat foods that look interesting.

Another outside the box idea is to use small plastic containers or Bento boxes to create a fun, visually appealing meal. Try veggies and bread sticks with yogurt dips or sauces. What about slices of meat and a few different cheeses with crackers? You can create your own meal that is much more healthy than the pre-packaged ones that you can buy in grocery stores. There are several websites that teach Bento - the Japanese art of take out - that have fun ideas for kid’s lunches. Try browsing these for inspiration.

Be big on variety. Offer your child lots of options. This will help them to find something that they like. Include fruit, bread, a veggie, a protein source, and a drink. Try to alternate them as well instead of sending an apple daily, sending an apple one day, an orange the next, grapes the next and then swap it up. For their drinks, try a smoothie. These are easy to make and fun to experiment with.

Get the kids involved. Kids are creative and savvy moms know they are more likely to eat something they have chosen for themselves. They can even find fun ways to package the items to make them more appealing. Let them use cookie cutters to create playful sandwiches or cuts of cheese. Have fun together browsing cookbooks and websites creating new ideas for future lunches. Let them help you do some of the work in the kitchen preparing their lunch box for the next day.

Use your leftovers. Who says lunch has to be a cold sandwich and an apple? If your child loved last night’s dinner and you have leftovers send them for your child’s lunch. At least you know they will eat it. It saves you some work too.

These are just a few ways to make healthy lunches that your child will eat. You’ll also feel certain that they are getting the nutrition they need to stay focused at school.

Vegetables Snacks Kids Like to Eat

September 29th, 2008 by CarrieLauth | No Comments | Filed in Cooking

What would you do if your kids asked for “More veggies, please?” Well, prepare yourself, because they just might when you serve vegetables like this. These snacks are great for after school treats.

Celery and Pretzel Butterfly

2 stalks of celery

12 large pretzels (not the straight kind)

6 tablespoons natural peanut butter

Around 18 raisins

12 slivered almonds

Wash the celery with cold water. Cut the celery stalks crosswise into thirds. Fill each celery stalk with one tablespoon of the peanut butter. Gently push 1 pretzel into the peanut butter, so the pretzel is parallel to the length of the celery stick and looks like a wing. Do the same on the other side of the celery, with another pretzel. Your celery stick now has butterfly wings!

Use the raisins for the eyes, nose and mouth of the butterfly. Create the antennae by pushing the slivered almonds into the filling, on top of the butterfly’s head.

Celery and Carrot Wagons

2 stalks of celery

12 toothpicks

16 carrot slices

1/2 cup of peanut butter; cheese spread or ranch dressing

20 Raisins

Wash the celery with cold water. Cut celery stalks crosswise into pieces that are about 3 inches long. Push two toothpicks through the sides of each celery stick to create the axles for four wheels. Fill each celery wagon with the peanut butter, or another spread. Stick a round carrot slice onto the end of each toothpick to form a wheel. After the wheel is attached, cover each toothpick tip with a raisin.

You can stick a toothpick into the end of the celery for a wagon handle, and cover the tip with another raisin. You can also leave the handle off to create a celery car instead.

Tomato Army Ants

3 small cherry tomatoes for each ant

9 toothpicks or grape stems for each ant.

Rinse the cherry tomatoes in cold water. Attach the three tomatoes with two of the toothpicks or grape stems. Use six more to create the ants legs, and two for the antennae. Make as many as you can to create a whole army of ants.

Zucchini or Cucumber Centipede

Small zucchinis or cucumbers

Shredded carrots

Rinse the zucchinis or cucumbers. Cut off the ends of each, and attach strips of zucchini or cucumber for the legs. You can use shredded carrots for the antennae.

Here are some other tips to make vegetables more child-friendly

Choose Colorful Veggies - Kids loves colors. When you serve vegetables to your children, try to serve an assortment of colors

Make them Little Finger Friendly – Slice vegetables into small pieces so they will be easier to pick up with small fingers.

Do the Dip - If your child is a reluctant vegetable eater, let them experiment with different dips. Most kids like ranch dip for their vegetables. Some kids will eat anything if it has cheese or peanut butter on it.

Vegetable Art - Instead of arranging vegetables for your kids, let them design their own vegetable creations. Give them an assortment of vegetables, spreads, and toothpicks, and let them create their own work of vegetable art.
