Typical Changes to Expect in Pregnancy

August 30th, 2008 by RandyLetter | No Comments | Filed in Pregnancy and Family Planning

Pregnancy is a life-changing event for a woman. She’s going to experience a great deal of these changes that affect all aspects of her life including physical, emotional, and even changes in her environment. During pregnancy a woman’s body can change in drastic ways that can be difficult to cope with, her hormones are going haywire, and all the while she must prepare to be a mother, which is a lifelong job. Pregnancy is a wonderful and joyous time, and if you understand all these changes about your body, your emotions, and how to prepare the rest of your life to welcome a baby into the world, you can experience a smooth pregnancy with easy transitions.

It turns out that the development of a human life is a complicated process! During pregnancy your body is going to do some wacky things. And the truth of the matter is that every woman’s body is going to react differently, and even every pregnancy that a woman has is going to be different from the others. With all the things that can transpire during pregnancy, it can be scary waters for a new mother-to-be to enter. There’s no reason to fear, because billions of mothers have already traveled this way, and although every journey is different, there are enough similarities among women to piece together a useful roadmap for you. Also, there are legions of healthcare professionals including doctors, midwives, nurses, nutritionists, PAs, and other specialists who have devoted their lives to bringing healthy babies into the world.

As soon as you find out that you’re pregnant, it’s necessary to get your butt to the doctor to make sure everything’s going ok so far. After you find out everything is doing well, the planning process must begin full swing. You need to decide if you want to go the hospital delivery route, or if you’d like more peaceful surroundings with a midwife. Also, you’ll want to double check your diet and make sure you’re eating tons of vegetables, fruits, and proteins to give your baby all the essential nutrients it needs to grow. Morning sickness might prevent you from eating some foods during your pregnancy, even foods that are considered healthy. Pay attention to what your body’s telling you, and even listen to your cravings. If your body is craving a certain food, it probably means the baby needs an essential nutrient found in the food – like the calcium and fat in ice cream. But remember that you need to stay healthy too; so don’t gain more weight than you need to gain during your pregnancy. High blood pressure and other health complications due to an unhealthy weight can lead to a difficult pregnancy and delivery.

Seek Community

To ease worries, and keep yourself informed about your pregnancy, it’s really a good idea to meet other pregnant women to swap stories and get advice. There are a gazillion great places to interact with other mothers, or soon-to-be mothers on the internet. There are lots of articles, blogs, forums, and messaging communities. You can even locate other pregnant women and moms in your area. Building these relationships with women who understand your situation is going to be invaluable to you as you navigate through the ups and downs of pregnancy, and then with the much more complicated world of motherhood. A healthy support system is a must during these times, and the best kinds of support come from those who can share your joys, pains, and everything in between with a true sense of empathy.

Kids & Crafts

August 30th, 2008 by LilyMorgan | No Comments | Filed in Arts and Crafts

When it comes to kids and crafts, there is no such thing as too much. When kids spend as much time as they do focused on electronics and the internet, daily or weekly craft time can be just the thing they need to get those brain cells working. Some kids gravitate naturally into the craft environment and have plenty to bring to the table. Others may be slower to excite and need some prodding. However, all kids can benefit from crafts and time spent in creative thought.

Start crafts by planning out ahead of time what you’d like to do. This will eliminate any humming and hawing that can occur if you pick something and find that you do not have the required tools or materials needed. By planning crafts in advance you are able to prepare by stopping in at craft stores for supplies. Keep your options open by staying organized. If you have more than one child in the family, have them take turns deciding on future projects that can be done together as a group.

Use recyclables for making crafts and art projects. It’s a great way to teach your kids about reusing items commonly found around the house. Everything from margarine containers to old compact discs makes great craft materials. Keep things like this on hand to get kids thinking. It can be a fun challenge to discover all of the things you can make out of just one item. Put your imagination to the test and see how many uses you can come up with for a plastic container or empty pop bottle.

Crafts should always be developed with full consideration of the child in mind. Crafts that do not fit the skill level or age learning level of the child can be a challenge and result in being little to no fun. If you have children of all ages wishing to participate in crafts, allow them to be original and come up with something on their own. Quite often kids simply need the materials and the rest comes together on its own. Kids do get frustrated easily though so keep an eye on them as they work. It’s best not to leave children unattended while working with craft materials like glue and scissors.

It’s important to stay open minded and be flexible. Kids are not generally perfectionists and do not mind if little things are not perfectly done. Don’t be too concerned with things like perfect lines and cuts or messiness. Crafts are messy at times and if you are going to conduct them then accept all that goes with them. Applying too much pressure to kids during craft time may result in them not wanting to participate any longer.

The most important thing about craft making is that kids learn through playing and being imaginative. Encouraging these gifts will strengthen them in growth. Allow kids to express themselves while learning. There is no greater gift. Craft time can be a positive experience for everyone so get Mom and Dad involved too.

What Your Mother Doesn’t Know About Early Pregnancy Stages

August 30th, 2008 by FranklinSimanjuntak | No Comments | Filed in Pregnancy and Family Planning

Pregnancy, no matter if it was planned or not, is important for any woman. Also, it is important to take good care of your body while it is forming another life inside. If you suspect that you might be pregnant, there are things you should do as soon as possible to help your body be as healthy as it can be.

It is important that you get enough of “the right material” to help prevent birth defects. Your midwife or doctor might want you to be taking prenatal vitamins, and often extra folic acid, at this early pregnancy stage. It is also wise to stop doing something that could get bad materials inside your body, such as smoking and taking birth control pills.

How Can You Tell If You Might Be Pregnant?

There are many common symptoms at this stage of early pregnancy. Not all pregnant women have all the symptoms, but you are likely to have at least one or two of them – maybe several. Take a look at the symptoms common at this stage of early pregnancy:

1. Missing Menstrual Period

One of the first indicators for women is to miss their menstrual period. Sometimes it is late, but a pregnant woman will skip it altogether. For some women, they suspect they are pregnant before they even miss their period. There are other symptoms that can help lead them to that conclusion.

2. Spotting

Many women may notice light spotting – which is quite a bit lighter than a regular period, though it happens about the same time that the period would be expected. Implantation of the fertilized embryo into the uterine wall, which is letting off some blood, caused the spotting. It is usually a brownish color, like dried blood. It should not be bright red, or in great quantity.

3. Exhaustion

Another common symptom at this stage of early pregnancy is to have exhaustion. Considering all the work your body is doing – making a new being – no wonder it takes its toll on the body! Also, there are hormonal changes in the pregnant woman’s body that can make the mommy-to-be feel practically drugged. For example, progesterone, which is in high levels during pregnancy, tends to be sedating. If you have this situation at this stage of early pregnancy, take a nap.

4. Headaches or Back Pain

It is also common to have headaches or back pain early in pregnancy. This is caused by the hormonal shifts as well as the other physical changes to the body that come with pregnancy.

5. Frequent Bathroom Visit

Another symptom that is common is the need to go to the bathroom much more often than before. There are several reasons for this, including the bladder getting irritable with the extra blood in the pelvic region, but the bottom line is, you may not want to go too far from the security of a bathroom during this stage of early pregnancy.

6. Changes In Body

Most women in the early pregnancy stage notice that their breasts become swollen and tender. The blood vessels on them can look like road maps, and the Montgomery glands (the little “pimple” looking things by the nipples) get bigger, along with the areolas (the red “target” around your nipple). These changes are in preparation for breastfeeding your baby.

7. Morning Sickness

Morning Sickness is probably the most frustrating symptom at this early pregnancy stage. While it doesn’t stick just with morning (some women have nausea all day) and not all women even get it, it is very common among pregnant women. Fortunately, it usually only lasts for the first trimester.

Closing Words

Early pregnancy stages are very important for your baby. You need to make sure if you are in it or not. Monitoring symptoms is as important as taking a pregnancy test. Do both and if the result is positive, then congratulations. You’re going to be a mommy.

Bring Back The Fire In Your Family By Cooking Together

August 29th, 2008 by zenmistress2002 | No Comments | Filed in Family

Most families in this day in age don’t really know each other. Sure, your kids may call you mom and dad, but what else? In most families, both parents have to work just to make ends meet to put food on their tables, clothes on their bodies, and to pay for your heat and lights. In older times, you heated with wood and used candles you made for light. Also, in these times the wife stayed home and raised the kids. To get to work you rode a horse or a donkey. You planted your own vegetables and raised your own chickens and cows.

Now, in our modern days, these kinds of things are not heard of. Most upper class people, mainly children, have never seen a chicken or know where an egg comes from. If you were to ask them where an egg came from, most of the time they will tell you that an egg comes from a grocery store. Sometimes these same children can’t tell the difference between a cow and a bull or a horse and a mule.

We need to get the fire back in family. Set a time when the family can just get together and read. Or, as they get older, set aside one night a week for everyone to be together when they can help with dinner. Have them pick out what to have for dinner.

This is to be a fun and safe time, so start out easy. This would be called “fun food” or “fun night”. Keep it simple so that the kids don’t get tired of this idea, and let them think it was all their idea. Each one can pick out an item and then let him or her make it. You might want to help them if they are too little.

They should also be told that they will be helping to clean up afterwards. Bring out the cookbooks, pens, and paper. Let them give you a list ahead of time so you can get these items from the grocery store. The ideas will be endless, and the kids will also learn to cook. This will help them when they move out on their own. It will make them move from being a simple or normal kid to someone that really enjoys and loves to cook.

Parents, you really need to learn to influence these young minds. Everybody can really have fun. To keep the fire on throughout the evening, watch a special movie that the whole family can watch after dinner. Lift their bedtime schedule, and just let them stay up as late as they want. Let them sleep in the living room or den, if that is where the television is. Remember that this is to help bring fire back into the family unit.

Who Put The Toil In Toilets?

August 29th, 2008 by kphirst | No Comments | Filed in Humor

Every woman has waited in line to use a toilet and every man has waited for a woman who is waiting in line. Because the designers of a new arena at St. Louis University knew that, they installed more ceramic commodes for women, unintentionally breaking the law. Missouri is one of the states that requires an equal number of porcelain facilities for both men and women. Nevertheless, because it takes women longer to use these facilities, there are times women can’t take equality sitting down.

New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg understands that and recently signed the Women’s Restroom Equity Act. The goal of this act if to bring public restroom parity to sports arenas, bars, movie theaters and other entertainment venues. This act mandates that those places have two women’s bathroom stalls for every one that is allotted to men. Now this is a double standard women can stand behind - well, stand in front of.

The Travel Center at mile marker #77 on Interstate 75 in rural Kentucky has literally become a place to go. The building’s limestone and cherry wood interior houses art galleries, shops, a cafe and a grill, as well as immaculately clean and ultra modern restrooms. There are even pots of fresh flowers by the sinks. Who would have thought a rest stop would be a place people would want to stop and smell the roses.

Who would have thought automatic-flushing toilets would pose a problem for potty training. Because children are too short to block the sensor, the porcelain potties scare children by flushing while the children are sitting on them. According to the author of “The Potty Training Answer Book”, parents should help their children face their fear of the whooshing, white monster. Jeffrey Kay, however, the father of a potty princess, decided to slay the monster. He invented the “Flush Stopper”, which adheres to the back of a toilet and blocks the sensor’s beam. Leave it to a dad to have a stand-up solution for the problem.

One solution for the problem of water conservation was the mandating of low-flush toilets, which began in 1992. Today switching to water-efficient water closets can save the average family as much as $100 a year and the savings on a national level are estimated to be $11.3 million a day. Isn’t it good to know that in a down economy toilets can help us stay flush?

Vintage advertising thermometers have become very popular items among collectors of antiques and Americana. In an age of digital clocks, watches, cell phones and computers, the mercury-filled analog thermometer is more popular than ever.

Evoking the nostalgia of earlier times, modern outdoor advertising thermometers have captured the look of vintage thermometers. Stamped from tin or other durable metals, todays outdoor advertising thermometers have the look and feel of older styles.
Popular themes for todays outdoor advertising thermometers range from cartoon characters and vintage cars to comic slogans.

Classic and vintage cars have always seemed to capture the imagination of collectors and automobile enthusiasts the world over. From the early days of the first horseless carriage to the muscle cars of the 1960s, Americans have always loved their cars and trucks. In fact, all things car-related have made their way onto collectible outdoor thermometers. Famous gasoline brands, motor oils, tires and car parts have remained very popular subjects for vintage and modern outdoor thermometers.

Famous gasoline brand names like Esso, Texaco, Mobil and Shell Oil made their mark early on. While many gasoline brands have faded from our collective memory, new brand names have been developed and can now be seen as subjects for modern outdoor advertising thermometers.
